A New Year, A New Book!

Thanks to the Get Liters who braved the cold temps on Thursday to discuss December's book "Night Film".

January's meeting will take place on Thursday January 9th at 7pm at the Barking Dog. We will be reading Katherine Dunn's GEEK LOVE. This story isn't about geeks of the nerdy kind, but geeks of the original kind..."a carnival performer who performs wild or disgusting acts". Geek Love tells the story of a family of circus performers who go to great lengths to create the most special attractions possible.

Also, a film component since we speak of films as often as books, seek out Tod Browning's 1932 film Freaks. Controversial, odd, but now a cult classic, Freaks tells the story of a collection of circus performers and a love triangle that may tear them apart....gooble gobble...

HPL is currently surveying the public to find out what book is the best fit for our 2014 Haverhill READS project. Haverhill READS will take place in Spring 2014, but we're working on choosing a book now.

The three choices were made by staff, but you can vote for which one you like best.

1) NOS4A2 by Joe Hill
2) A City So Grand by Stephen Puleo
3) 1984 by George Orwell

November's Meeting

First off, thank you to all the participants in our first meeting! We hope that you all will spread the word and that each month we will bring in some more readers. But, we are super pleased with our first turnout!

For November, we will be reading A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan. Originally published in 2010, this book was mega-popular and won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. A genre bending book about intersecting lives and characters, this should provide excellent discussion points!

November 14th, 7pm, Barking Dog in Haverhill.

Be there!

Happy Hump Day

Feel free to make suggestions about what books you'd like Get Lit to focus on at future meetings.

The library has also updated our movie license so we will be launching a new series of FREE movies. We will have access to way more films than we have in the past, including a lot more new releases, so we will try to offer a more varied movie experience, including some scary movies for Halloween.

We're listening to this sweet song about librarians

Also, if you come to Get Lit at the Barking Dog Ale House you can order this awesome cinnamon bun sundae!

Get Lit on GoodReads!

We now have our own group on GoodReads. Start sharing! Here

October is right around the corner...

We're excited for our first meeting in October. We have posted info about the event, well, everywhere. BUT it is now on HPL's event calendar, so if you think you want to come you can register there. Registration isn't binding by any means, but it will give us an idea of how many folks might be coming. Our goal is to make Get Lit very casual and fun, we will start each meeting around 7pm but people can come and go as they please. Each month will feature a specific book, but we will discuss other books, movies, TV, whatever people want to chat about. At October's meeting we will choose November's primary book.

This Monday morning we are listening to some classic ABBA, because who can ease you into another workweek better than the soothing tones of some Swedish songbirds?
